How to get back on track with your goals

You started strong. Your motivation level was high. Your enthusiasm was through the roof!

But suddenly, it’s three weeks later (or maybe just a regular Thursday) and you’re feeling a bit like sh*t.

You ‘don’t really feel like it’.

Whatever ‘it’ is.

Writing that blog, going to the gym, studying a new subject, meal prepping, meditating or getting out of bed early to set your intentions for the day.

Whatever the action is, you feel flat. You don’t have the get up and go you had when you started. You start to think things like “why bother”? It will take you so long to hit your goal anyway. What’s the point? Just start again tomorrow.

Or Monday.

Or next year…

So, how do you get back into the groove when you’ve lost your mojo, baby? Here are five tried and tested techniques to get you back on your game.

1. Do a quick inventory of your life.

It may be helpful to journal this one out. Grab a pen and paper and get to work.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s working in your life right now?
  • What’s not working in your life right now?
  • Why do you feel flat and uninspired?
  • Have you been nourishing and moving your body and sleeping well?
  • How are your relationships with loved ones?
  • How is your financial situation?

Often, we can veer off course because of a block in our lives that may seem unrelated to our goal.

But because we’re not made of separate parts, anything that is going on in your life has the potential to have a knock-on effect on other areas. Think about it. If you’ve ever been sleep-deprived, you’ll know how much that can impact almost every area of your life. Nothing happens in isolation. Take stock of what’s going on and see if you can pinpoint something that may be causing an issue.

2. Revisit your ‘why’

We looked at the importance of having a strong ‘why’ over in this blog. If you have a strong enough why, revisiting it can often help you refocus, remember why you started in the first place and could be just the kick up the bum you need to get back into motion.

3. Look at past experiences.

While I’m not one for living in the past, sometimes visiting it can be a helpful tool to see what your sticking point is.

Have you started and stopped on this goal before? If so, at what point did you throw in the towel and decide it was too much?

Now ask yourself why?

Why did you choose to give up on your goal? You may be surprised to see a pattern emerge. Often, we give up on something due to discomfort and stepping outside of our comfort zone. This is a dangerous place for us humans who crave comfort and security.

When it comes down to it, we often quit due to our own fears.

Fear of failure.

Fear of success even!

What has stopped you in the past? Can you identify a fear that keeps rearing its ugly head? If so, it’s time to tackle that fear once and for all.

4. Find inspiration.

Along with revisiting your why, you need to find something that gets you fired up again to take action.

This might include:

  • reviewing your vision board (or creating one);
  • watching motivational vids on Youtube;
  • listening to an uplifting podcast;
  • sharing your struggles with a trusted friend or partner;
  • listening to music that fires you up; or
  • moving your body to change your emotional and physical state.

Hop up off the couch, do x20 jumping jacks and see if your mood changes. Go on – give it a go!

5. Forgive yourself.

We are only human! We are NOT perfect creatures. We stuff up. We make mistakes. We fall off track and we give up when the going gets tough. It’s part of who we are.

Remember – any goal that’s worth achieving takes effort, consistency and determination.

The road to the goal is not pretty and it’s not a straight line. It’s a sh*tstorm of emotional highs and lows, self-belief and self-sabotage.

Give yourself a break. Forgive yourself and get right back on track. Don’t let one mistake spiral into months of self-loathing. You are better than that. You are capable of great things. You’ve got what it takes to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and take another run at your goal.

Keep going and if your dream is important to you, NEVER give up.

Now, go get ‘em!
